Super Adoption - Your Chance To Find a Pet

by carolyn mitchell

A roar of purrs and swishing tails will resound across the state September 22-24, as hundreds of dogs and cats gather in Salt Lake City for the first Super Adoption of the No More Homeless Pets in Utah campaign.

Pure breeds, mutts, kittens and puppies from 20 animal rescue groups and shelters throughout Utah will be available for adoption at the event, held on the parking lot of the PETsMART at 389 West 1830 South.

No More Homeless Pets in Utah aims to end shelter deaths statewide by increasing adoptions and spay/neuters, offering discounts on sterilizations and providing a mobile spay/neuter unit. The five-year program is administered by Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab and financed by an $8 million grant from Maddie's Fund in California.

"We hope to adopt out 600 animals over the three days of this event," said Gregory Castle, NMHP in Utah director. "We have dogs and cats that could be wonderful pets and make households happier around the state."

The mobile spay/neuter clinic, called The Big Fix on Tour, will be offering discount sterilizations at the Super Adoption from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 22 and 23. The clinic will also be on hand September 24, but only for tours.

All the wonderful animals seeking homes in the Super Adoption have been spayed or neutered and are up-to-date on shots. Prospective adopters can get acquainted with animals in a special area called the Pawtanical Gardens.

The event will feature food vendors, clowns and musical performances by Olea, Grooveberry Jam, Diane King, Adrian Isaac Band and Ridin' the Fault Line.

Other activities include dog-training demonstrations, information on pet grooming techniques and a pet caricaturist.

Super Adoption hours are September 22, 3 - 7 p.m.; September 23, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. and September 24, Noon - 5 p.m.

Persons wishing to have their pets sterilized during the Big Fix visits to the Super Adoption should not allow their pets to eat after 9 p.m. the night before and should bring their pets in carriers.
